getting into the holiday spirit

Happy December, y’all!

In an effort to quench my thirst for all things holiday cheer – I decided to join in on the Blogmas fun, and dedicate the next 25 days to all things CHRISTMAS!

“Hold up,” I’m sure you’re thinking, “what the heck is …. Blogmas?” Basically, it’s a new spin on one of my favorite Christmas traditions – the Advent calendar. From now until December 25th, I’ll be sharing my favorite recipes, Christmas traditions, DIY posts, and stories from Christmases past.

Thanks to inspiration from Aycan over at Little White Socks, I’m kicking off this month with “The Christmas Tag,” to give y’all a chance to learn a little more about my favorite traditions and holiday-isms.

1. WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE CHRISTMAS MOVIE/S?

This is a little tough, because I want to steer away from the usual “Elf” answer (even though it is tied for #1 and is acceptable to watch year-round) – so I’m going to have to go with Love Actually. Not only is Hugh Grant a sight for sore eyes, the entire cast is incredible and the story line is just so heartwarming. Plus, it includes the quote I continually come back to when the world just seems so dark,

Whenever I get gloomy with the state of the world, I think about the arrivals gate at Heathrow Airport. General opinion’s starting to make out that we live in a world of hatred and greed, but I don’t see that. It seems to me that love is everywhere. Often, it’s not particularly dignified or newsworthy, but it’s always there – fathers and sons, mothers and daughters, husbands and wives, boyfriends, girlfriends, old friends. When the planes hit the Twin Towers, as far as I know, none of the phone calls from the people on board were messages of hate or revenge – they were all messages of love. If you look for it, I’ve got a sneaky feeling you’ll find that love actually is all around.

2. DO YOU OPEN YOUR PRESENTS ON CHRISTMAS EVE OR CHRISTMAS MORNING?

This one has actually changed through the years for me. Growing up an only child, we always opened presents as soon as I woke up in the morning (after the coffee was made, anyway) – but I was allowed to open one present Christmas even. When I was in high school I would volunteer to take the Christmas morning shifts at work so my coworkers could be with their children – which led to Christmas presents being opened on Christmas Eve, after we celebrated Christmas with my Grandma.

3. HAVE YOU EVER HAD A WHITE CHRISTMAS?

I grew up in the Snow Belt, so I’ve had a significantly higher number of white Christmases than not.

4. WHAT MADE YOU REALISE THE TRUTH ABOUT SANTA?

No one ever sat me down and told me, so I’d have to say I just realized it on my own – but, my mama has a framed newspaper clipping of the “Yes, Virginia” letter that she pulls out and displays every single year, and for me? THAT is the ‘truth’ about Santa.

5. CAN YOU NAME ALL OF SANTA’S REINDEER?

You know Dasher and Dancer and Prancer and Vixen, Comet and Cupid and Donner and Blitzen, but do you recall? The most famous reindeer of all?

6. WHAT IS YOUR ALL-TIME FAVORITE HOLIDAY FOOD/SWEET TREAT?

Does mulled wine count? Because, if not, puppy chow is a great second.

7. BE HONEST: DO YOU LIKE GIVING GIFTS OR RECEIVING GIFTS BETTER?

I think we can all agree that we love being on the receiving ends of gifts, but I’m going to say that giving gifts wins by a nose on this. One of my favorite things about the holiday season is hunting down the perfect gift, and the look on my loved ones faces when they open it. It’s even better when it’s a huge surprise for them! Plus, I love wrapping and bows and cute gift tags, so it’s a win-win.

8. WHAT WOULD BE YOUR DREAM PLACE TO VISIT FOR THE HOLIDAY SEASON?

I’d love to visit somewhere like Denver or Bozeman that gets a TON of snow for Christmas, but if we’re being totally honest, my ‘dream place’ would be international. Yes, I’m looking at you, Nuremburg, Germany! My family is Bavarian, so I’ve always felt a strong connection to my roots. What better place to connect even further than in a Christkindlesmarkt just miles from my family’s ancestral homestead? Carriage rides, Gluhwein, and shopping sounds like the perfect Christmas celebration to me.

9. WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE CHRISTMAS SONG?

I could list a million and still not be done, but I’ll say Michael Buble’s “Cold December Night.”

10. DO YOU MAKE NEW YEARS RESOLUTIONS? DO YOU STICK TO THEM?

I did pretty well this year, actually. I think I will be making a short list of attainable resolutions again this year. However, headed into 2018, I’m also trying something a little different and trying a new challenge (keep your eyes out for a post about it closer to NYE!)

11. FAVORITE CHRISTMAS SCENT?

I’m not crazy about peppermint as a scent, but I’ll be darned if I don’t love some cinnamon and pine.

12. AS A KID WHAT WAS THE ONE (CRAZY, WILD, EXTRAVAGANT) GIFT YOU ALWAYS ASKED FOR BUT NEVER RECEIVED?

My mom could probably answer this one for me, but I don’t know that there really was one. However, my list was always about a million miles long – it was a yearly tradition when we received the JC Penney Christmas catalog, I would go through and circle every single thing I would like to have. And if you remember those catalogs, they were about the size of a phone book. Talk about a big list.

13. WHAT’S THE BEST PART ABOUT CHRISTMAS FOR YOU?

I love the festivities and the lights and the presents and spending time with my family, but one tradition that we’ve had since I was very young is “adopting” an Angel from the Angel Tree. There is something so humbling about being able to shop for someone whose name you don’t even know, to ensure they have a joyous Christmas too.

Well, there it is – I hope you’ve enjoyed finding out a little about my Christmas! Do you have a favorite Christmas tradition, or a recipe for a great holiday treat? I’d love to hear about them, so make sure to comment them below!

Be on the lookout for another Blogmas post tomorrow!
